Kalburgi Cement

The French Cement major, Vicat has ambitious plans for their India operations. Kalburgi Cement, a wholly owned subsidiary of Vicat, will be rebranding its cement in India. This is the first time in Vicat history that the French Cement company is allowing the use of its brand name outside of its home markets. The two Vicat brands will be Vicat Optimate, for commercial buyers, and Vicat Duramate, for retail sales.

Kalburgi Cement also inaugurated its 1.2 million MPTA bulk cement terminal in Kalamboli, Navi Mumbai. The rail-based loading and unloading terminal will bring cement from the Kalburgi production plant in Karnataka to Maharashtra which is Kalburgi Cement’s chief market, accounting for the bulk of its 2.4 million tonnes in sales last fiscal. The company has a total production capacity of 2.75 MPTA. Kalburgi Cement has a 10-11% market share in Maharashtra.

The Rs. 65-crore Navi Mumbai terminal is part of the company’s Rs.1,735 crore three year investment plan in India.  This includes a second line of 2.75 MPTA capacity doubling project at the Kalburgi cement plant and an additional grinding capacity of 1.7 MPTA at Vizag. With this the company hopes to break into the easternIndian markets once the grinding unit for clinker is established in Vizag. Vicat in India has total cement manufacturing capacity of 7.75 MPTA and envisages expanding this to 13 MPTA by 2021.

Vicat India also has operational control of the Hyderabad based Bharti Cement, which has 5.5 MPTA capacity in the Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh. Cement produced out of here is being sold under the Bharti brand name.

India Cements is at 80 per cent capacity utilisation as against 67 per cent capacity utilization for the corresponding quarter the previous year. And is expected to reach full capacity utilization shortly.
The company has reported a drop in its net profit at Rs.21 crore for the quarter ended June 30, 2018 as compared to Rs.26 crores the previous year.

The company's cement sales stood at about 31 lakh tonnes of cement in Q1 of this fiscal as against 27 lakh tonnes a year ago. But lower cement prices per bag have resulted in a drop in revenue, which stood at Rs.1,361 crore as against Rs.1,462 crore in Q1 of previous fiscal.

Net plant realisation stood at Rs.3,279 per tonne, 9 per cent lower than the previous year. Operating profit stood at Rs.162 crore as against Rs.191 crore in Q1 of previous fiscal.

From a two plant company having a capacity of just 1.3 million tonnes in 1989, India Cements has grown in the last two decades to a total capacity of 15.5 MTPA. After the approval of a Scheme of Amalgamation and arrangement between Trinetra Cement Ltd and Trishul Concrete Products Ltd with The India Cements Ltd, all the cement assets have come under one roof - India Cements.
India Cements has now 8 integrated cement plants in Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan and two grinding units, one each in Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra.

Sanghi Industries reported Q1 results that were below market estimates. Lower-than-expected realization was the major factor behind the results.
Sales volume was up 3.4 per cent YOY to 0.69 MTPA. Lower capacity utilization 58 per cent / 66 per cent in FY18 / Q1FY19 continues to be a concern considering the company's aggressive capex plan. JK Cements Profits Decline

JK Cement Ltd on Saturday posted 37.8 % decline in standalone profit after tax to Rs. 493 million for the quarter ended June 30,2018 on the back of lower revenues. In a filing to BSE, the company had reported a standalone profit after tax of Rs. 793 million in the year-ago period. The revenue of JK Cement for the April-June quarter declined to Rs. 11.31 billion, compared to Rs. 12.27 billion in the corresponding quarter of the previous fiscal. The total expenses dropped to Rs. 10.67 billion, from Rs. 11.23 billion in the year-ago period, according to the BSE filing.

JK Cement also announced that its shareholders had approved through a special resolution of a plan to raise up to Rs. 500 crore through issuance of non-convertible debentures on private placement basis.

JK Cement Ltd is an affiliate of the multi-disciplinary industrial conglomerate JK Organisation. Their cement operations commenced with commercial production of grey cement at Nimbahera, Rajasthan in May 1975. Subsequently, the Company set up 2 more units in Rajasthan at Mangrol and Gotan. The Indian Cement Industry began 2018-2019 on firm ground as a majority of cement companies showed a decent volume growth in the first quarter. #ACC and #AmbujaCements, two of India's biggest cement companies who are part of the global cement giant #LafargeHolcim, reported commendable profits in the second quarter of 2018 on the back of healthy volume growth.

With a pick-up in infrastructure development activities, cement demand is expected to remain steady. Government spending on infrastructure, along with common-man housing schemes, is expected to push the Indian cement industry growth to 7%-8% in the current financial year.

On the cost front, the beginning of 2018 turned out to be a challenging as the Indian Cement industry faced multiple obstacles like sand mining ban, pet coke ban and rising fuel costs. However, the worst seems to be over as some of these cost dependant issues seem to have been solved. Relative to that, companies are showing minor improvement on a quarter-on-quarter (QoQ) basis as rising input cost pressure appear to have stabilised. Based on the latest quarter results, the operating profit margins of both ACC and Ambuja Cements have improved on a quarter-on-quarter (QoQ) basis.

The Indian Cement Industry is looking to improve capacity utilisation in near future as the cement demand environment riding on the back of pick-up in infrastructure and housing is expected to remain upbeat.

Nirma Cements

Nuvoco Vistas Ltd ( formerly called Lafarge India)

During July of 2016 the Gujarat based detergent and chemical major Nirma, astounded the Indian Cement Industry by outbidding rivals JSW Cement & Piramal Enterprises to acquire the Lafarge India business which has a total capacity of approx. 11 million tonnes per annum.

Ahmedabad based billionaire industrialist Karsanbhai Patel who founded the Nirma Group is betting heavy on the  Indian cement sector and is gearing up for a massive IPO of its cement arm Nuvoco Vistas Ltd ( formerly called Lafarge India) which houses the Lafarge assets. This is seen by cement industry insiders as part of its next major move in the cement segment after the $1.4bn buyout of Lafarge India's assets in 2016.

Nuvoco Vistas Ltd ( formerly called Lafarge India), has six plants in Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Bengal and Haryana presently running at 95 % cement capacity utilization. In addition to the six plants, the standalone cement unit in Rajasthan has a capacity of around 2 MPTA.

Care Ratings independent cement sector update released earlier in May 2018, states "with two major states (Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh) going into Assembly elections followed by General Elections in 2019, the demand from infrastructure and construction is expected to peak in the central, eastern and western regions of India. Utilization in cement capacity across regions is expected to improve during the year to around 67%. Housing and real estate segment demand is expected to grow by around 6-7% whereas demand from Infrastructure segment is expected to grow by 8-10%."

Ambuja Cements' Share Prices Rise

Riding on the dividend from ACC at Rs. 141 crore, the profit after tax during the quarter under review rose to Rs. 499 crore from Rs. 392 crore for the corresponding period of the previous year.

The cement major's net sales grew to Rs 2,927 crore from Rs. 2,817 crore earned during the quarter ended June 30, 2017.

Leading Cement Makers Penalised

NCLAT dismisses cement makers' plea against penalty for cartelisation.

In a major setback to India's leading cement producers, the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal today dismissed their plea against the approx. Rs 6,300 crores penalty imposed by India fair trade regulator over alleged cartelisation in the cement sector. The appellate tribunal also upheld that the penalty imposed by the Competition Commission of India (CCI).
The appellate tribunal observed that the fair trade regulator had imposed a minimum fine.

Some cement makers in consultation with their legal departments are likely to challenge the order before the Supreme Court.
